TonyMoly Backstage Gel Eyeliner Review

by - 9:21 PM

Continuing with my Korean products obsession, here's yet another k-beauty product review! I heard so much about this gel eyeliner and I totally understand how this is a classic favourite in Korea! I got it in black a few months ago and I liked it so much that I got it in an another colour! Since I really enjoy these gel eyeliners, I want to share my love for them!

Packaging

One of the only cons of this eyeliner is the packaging. It's awkward and hard to store. However, although it's quite inconvenient, apparently the shape of this packaging is supposed to help keep the product moistened for longer. My biggest problem with gel eyeliners is how fast they dry out, typically after a few months they're too stiff to use. Seeing that mine is still very creamy after a couple of months,  the concept of the packaging seems to be working! Also, the packaging is quite sturdy. Since it's not glass it won't break if you drop it and I can testify that.
These eyeliners come with a built-in brush, which is the reason for it's tall height. You just pull out the top and you have an easy to access eyeliner brush.
The brush is good quality but I don't like the shape of it. It's thick so it's hard to make a thin, precise line with it. Personally, I don't use the brush but I do think that it could be really convenient if you want to bring your eyeliner with you to touch up or to travel with.

Formula

I have the Tonymoly backstage gel eyeliner in the 2 shades; 01 black and 02 brown. They also come in a few other shades such as pearl brown and pearl black. The formula of these eyeliners are quite creamy, so they're very easy to apply, but they're not too wet. They dry down fairly quickly, which is something I like. These last very well on the lids, I have worn these for over 12 hours, in a really hot, humid climate and it did not smudge, fade, flake or leak AT ALL. The eyeliner looked freshly applied and I wasn't even wearing primer! Also, these don't irritate my eyes.
These gel eyeliners are very pigmented as you can see in the swatches above. I love how dark and matte these shades are. I always wanted to try a brown gel eyeliner but I was scared too. The shade 02 brown is a very dark brown and from a distance it almost a looks black. I love this shade because it looks a lot more natural then black, but still defines the eyes.

Waterproof Test

As far as I know, these are not marketed as waterproof but I wanted to test that out. I ran the swatches under water for a minute and this how they look (NOTE: I took this picture again because my original one was quite blurry so that's why the swatches look different). As you can see, the eyeliner didn't budge at all, the colours are just as pigmented. So even though these are not meant to be waterproof, they do perform as if they were.
I used a makeup wipe and wiped the swatches quite roughly and you can see that they held through pretty well. At this point the swatches were still wet from the waterproof test before so considering that, these performed quite well. These eyeliners are truly very long lasting. I recommend using a really good eye makeup remover when trying to take this off. I love using coconut oil because it really melts down the eyeliner and removes it really well.

Final Thoughts

I really love these gel eyeliners. There are my favourite eyeliners thus far! And they're very inexpensive! You can get them for about $10-$12 online or from TonyMoly stores. I wish these came in more colours like purple and blue because I would purchase all of them!

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Long lasting
  • Very pigmented
  • Don't dry out fast like most gel liners

Cons:

  • The packaging makes it inconvenient to store
